The 13th ASFAA Congress in Bali, Indonesia

The "13th ASFAA Congress" organized by ASFAA and hosted by Asiania Kungfu, Dragon & Lion Dance (Dragon Boat) Federation was successfully concluded on 13 October this year, in Bali, Indonesia.

Participants from over 15 countries and regions met from 9 to 13 October 2014 in Bali, Indonesia, for the 13th ASFAA Congress. Recognizing the importance and the rising trend of sport tourism; under the theme “Designating to Move for Active Tourism”, the Congress explored the synergetic and collaborative relationship between Recreation, Sport and Tourism and the positive impacts sport tourism have on the development and promotion of sport for all.

The Opening Ceremony was held on 10 October in the Agung Hall of the Congress official venue, Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel and officiated by ASFAA President, Mr. Alex Vong Iao Lek; TAFISA special advisor and ASFAA Vice President, Hon. Brian Dixon; Congress Chairman, Dr. Nurdin Purnomo and Director of Bali Government Tourism Office, Mr. Agung Yuniartha.

The Ceremony opened with a traditional Balinese welcome dance and music performance followed by welcome address of the officiating guests of honour. In his opening remarks, ASFAA President, Mr. Alex Vong Iao Lek highlighted the importance of the role of policy makers in tackling the growing issues of inactive lifestyles and the associated health problems. The need to reinstall physical activity into people’s everyday life; to empower individuals to make healthy choices; to cultivate an active lifestyle at early age and to promote active ageing of citizens.  President Vong added that organization like ASFAA has a crucial role to play in providing the necessary platform to bring together individuals, private and public institutions to work together, to encourage the exchange of information and experiences for the common pursuit to disseminate the health and social benefits brought by regular physical activity.

The Congress was officially declared opened with the striking of a gong by the officiating guests and concluded with a special address delivered by Ms. Bae Shillings, TAFISA Director of Programs and Business Development on the “Use of Sport Tourism to Create Early Positive Experiences in Sport for All & Physical Activity”, which set the tone of the engaging Congress days to come.

Prior to the opening ceremony on 9 October, ASFAA Board of Directors, ASFAA members and congress participants were honoured to have an audience with the Governor of Bali Province, Indonesia, His Excellency Made Mangku Pastika at the welcome dinner hosted at the Governor’s official residence.

In the compact and informative 3-day Congress Program, participants discussed and shared experiences on the various aspects, strategies and initiatives of sport tourism, with the focus on the following sub themes:

• Broader Understanding of Sports Tourism – Beyond the Big Events

• Using Tourism to Create Early Positive Experiences in Sport for All and Physical Activity.

• Sports Tourism – Designing for Success

• Designing Sport for All Legacy and Major Sports Events

• Marketing Sport for All Tourism

• Spaces and Places – Designing a Sport for All friendly Environments for Tourists

Through the Congress, participants were able to deepen their understanding of the intricate relationship between sport tourism and sport for all and physical activity as well as to learn about the experiences and sport tourism programs adopted in other countries and regions. Through lively discussion, the participants examined ways which sport tourism can be used to encourage participation in sport for all and physical activity.

In line with the Congress theme as well as to encourage the exchange of culture and friendship, the Congress program was further enriched with a range of social activities including participation in the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2014, one of the largest annual festival of arts, culture, sports, music and exhibitions in Bali as well as participation in traditional sport games in the form of Dragon dance competition.

ASFAA was honoured to receive the presence and support of its founding President and TAFISA President Prof. Dr. Ju Ho Chang in Bali, who addressed the Congress participants at the closing of the Congress on 12 October.

ASFAA thanks the Congress host, Asiania Kungfu, Dragon & Lion Dance (Dragon Boat) Federation for their effort in the organization of the Congress and to the Government of Bali and TAFISA for given the event their full support. ASFAA is also extremely grateful to all participants and speakers that helped to make the 13th ASFAA Congress a great success.

The next edition of the ASFAA Congress will be held in 2016 in Macau, China and hosted by ASFAA member, Macau Sport Development Board of the Macau SAR Government.
