THE 2007 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES

2007-09-21

The 2007 Australian University Games will be held from the 23 - 28 of September with 30 sports being contested. Participants will be able to compete in: Athletics, Australian Rules Football, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country, Cycling, Fencing, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kendo, Lawn bowls, Netball, Rowing, Rugby League 7s, Rugby Union 7's, Soccer, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo.

While university sport is steeped in tradition and intervarsity competition on the sporting field has taken place since the birth of universities in Australia, the concept of a multi-sport event to showcase national university sport is a relatively new one.

Since its inception in 1993, the Australian University Games (AUG) has grown to be Australia largest annual multi-sport event. Held each September / October, the Games are renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for Australia university athletes and are the flagship event on the national university sporting calendar.

The Games have also been a recipient of two key industry awards. In 2001 the event was recognized for its contribution to the Australian sporting landscape when it won the NSW Sports Award for Event of the Year. In 2005 the Games won the prestigious Event of the Year at the Queensland Sports Federation Sport Awards.

The Games are recognized as a perfect opportunity to provide university athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard, to compete against each other in a national multi-sport event. As such, the Games have built up a reputation as a not-to-be-missed, event attracting over 6,000 participants each year.

Off the sporting field, an action-packed, week-long social program is conducted to complement the sporting activities and enhance the event experience for participants.

Each year the sporting schedule of the Games is made up of more than 28 individual and team sports. Unlike previous years where competitors were required to qualify for the national event through regional games, this year's event is open to all competitors and will have separate competitive and social divisions.

Australian University Sport is proud to announce the Gold Coast as the host of the 2007 Australian University Games. Set in 'Australia's Playground' the event will showcase some of the Gold Coast's best sporting venues and provide students with an unforgettable social program to compliment sporting schedules.
